Iâm feeling well enough the following day to take a shower, realizing with horror that Colt snuggled with me after I sweated in the same jammies for three days.
Just kill me now.
I bought a few small gifts for Maggie, which Iâm wrapping when the doorbell rings again. Maggie works through to Sunday, so Iâll be alone for Christmas tomorrow. Itâs both a blessing and a curse, Iâd like to have someone spend it with me, but at the same time, I think I might need the time alone to mourn my first Christmas without my mom.
She loved the holiday and went out of her way to make it festive and special. Itâs weird to not be surrounded by decorations. It almost doesnât feel like the holiday at all.
When the doorbell rings, I rush toward it with a foolish surge of hope, opening it with a wide grin, which falls to confusion when I glance around at nothing.
The hair on the nape of my neck stands on end and I shiver, my eyes catching on a brightly wrapped present as I close the door. Laying innocently on the porch is a small box, wrapped prettily in red paper with a shiny gold bow.
Glancing around, I hesitate, before grabbing the damn thing and pulling it inside, and slamming the door behind me. Iâm still sitting with my back against the door, staring at another damn gift from my fan when the doorbell rings.
With a shriek and pounding heart, I pull away, my pulse which had just calmed down picking up a wild tempo. This inspires my lungs to freeze, and I break out in a coughing fit. Over the din, I hear Colt say cautiously through the door, âFinn?â
Feeling ridiculous, I pull it open to find him standing on the other side with a small gift in his hand. I canât help the small chuff of hysterical laughter at the sight of the box and he steps in cautiously, eyeing me carefully.
âEverything okay?â
âYes, yeah,â I mutter, taking a deep breath. âCome in.â
He follows me around to the couch where we sit down in unison, but my pleasure at the thought it might be him at the door has faded under the prospect of what new horror might be hidden in the damn box by the door.
âWhat is it?â Colt asks, searching my gaze.
Hesitantly, I point behind me toward the door and say, âI got another present.â
Coltâs mouth turns grim, his eyes taking on a frustrated intensity that makes me shiver. âWhere?â
âThe red box by the door.â
He pulls up from the couch and stalks around bringing the gift back and asking, âThis?â
With revulsion, I nod, and he sits beside me, carefully opening it like there might be a bomb inside. Which shit, maybe there is.
Peeling back the paper, I hold my breath as he reads.
Finn, my heart. Imagine my disappointment to see you with the very same fucker who tormented you. Why would you let that scum anywhere near you? Is he fucking you? Do you like it? This is not acceptable.
